COACHING APPLICATION PROCESS & INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: USA HOCKEY REGISTRATION

All coaches must register with USA Hockey each season.

https://membership.usahockey.com/

Go to the USA Hockey website and register as a coach. After completing your registration, be sure to print and save your USA Hockey confirmation code. You will need this confirmation number throughout the coaching registration process.

The USA Hockey registration fee is $54.00. This fee will be reimbursed by SYHA provided you are rostered on a team.

You will enter your USA Hockey confirmation number in the SYHA Coaching Application.

STEP 2: Minnesota Hockey Background Screening

This must be completed and approved before taking the ice.

All Minnesota Hockey coaches are required to complete a background screening. Background screenings are valid for two years and must be completed and approved before a coach can take the ice or be rostered on a team.

Coaches can complete the background screening through the USA Hockey/Minnesota Hockey screening process:

https://www.ncsisafe.com/Members/SelfRegBatchCode.aspx?srb=35615801

The background screening fee is $30.00.

Coaches are encouraged to visit the screening website and attempt to apply. If your screening is already current and up to date, the system should not allow you to submit a new application.

You will get this message if you are up to date:

You are not eligible to submit a screen at this time. Please see www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen for questions. Please note, background screens are valid for two seasons. If you received a cleared screen in the 25-26 season, you will not be able to submit a new screen until the 27-28 season

STEP 3: SafeSport Training

This must be completed and approved before taking the ice.

https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining

All coaches must complete SafeSport training every season. SafeSport training is a free online training required by USA Hockey.

The initial certification and refresher courses are valid for one year. Coaches must complete either the initial certification or the refresher course each season before participating with a team. Coaches cannot be rostered until SafeSport certification is complete.

SafeSport training should be started through the USA Hockey website. You will need your USA Hockey confirmation number from Step 1.

SafeSport completion can be verified through USA Hockey reports once your USA Hockey number is entered in the SYHA Coaching Application. Coaches do not need to email or upload their SafeSport certificate unless specifically requested.

STEP 4: Age-Specific / Gender-Specific Module

This must be completed before taking the ice with your team.

https://www.usahockey.com/agespecificmodules

You will need to log into your account and then scroll to the bottom to find the modules

USA Hockey requires all coaches to complete the required age-specific and/or gender-specific module for the level they are coaching.

These modules are online trainings specific to the level of play. Age-specific modules do not expire once completed. However, coaches must complete a new module if they are coaching a level they have not previously coached.

Age-specific modules are separate from CEP certification levels. Coaches may complete more than one module in a season if needed.

STEP 5: CEP Clinic Registration

Coaches must register for the required USA Hockey Coaching Education Program, also known as CEP, clinic.

https://www.usahockey.com/coachingclinics

When completing the SYHA Coaching Application, coaches will be asked to enter the date of the CEP class they are registered to attend.

Please make sure you register for the correct CEP clinic based on your current coaching certification level and coaching assignment.

STEP 6: CONCUSSION TRAINING

This must be completed before taking the ice.

Minnesota Hockey requires all coaches to complete concussion training prior to being rostered on a team. The required concussion training form and training information can be found on the Minnesota Hockey website. More info and a free CDC concussion training can be found here:   HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Training for Coaches - CDC TRAIN - an affiliate of the TRAIN Learning Network powered by the Public Health Foundation

Coaches must submit/upload the concussion training certificate and required form through the SYHA Coaching Application each year so all documents are stored in one central location.

STEP 7: SYHA Coaching Application

All coaches must complete the SYHA Coaching Application for the 2026–2027 season.

During the application, coaches will be asked to provide:

  • USA Hockey confirmation number
  • Confirmation that background screening is complete or current
  • SafeSport completion status
  • Age-specific/gender-specific module completion
  • CEP clinic registration date
  • Concussion training certificate/form upload
  • Signed Coaches Code of Conduct
  • Signed Coaching Agreement
