Mite FAQ
We are new to hockey, what should we expect?
Welcome we are so glad to have you! Rookie Mites is for those new to hockey/new to skating (All ages welcome) or Pre-K/ Kindergarten. They will have a short pre-season in November and December, with practices one day per weekend for one hour (the time of day will vary) followed by a small break. Rookie Mite season officially starts in January with practices & scrimmages 2 days per weekend (times will vary).
What are DIBS and how many hours do I need to work?
DIBS are volunteer hours, you can complete your hours in a variety of ways throughout the season such as working the concessions stand, parent coaching, team managing for example. Each family M1 and above have an obligation of 18 DIBS hours.
When will practice and game schedules be available?
Teams are rostered in November/Early December at which time your schedule in Crossbar will be updated based on your assigned team. Prior to that you will follow the schedule based on your level, all practices and games will be loaded to Crossbar.
Do rookie mite parents have to attend the parent meeting?
No, you are not required to attend but are welcome to attend if you would like. All other Mite levels, this meeting is required, plan to be at the high school on Sunday 10/26 at 5pm.
My child needs equipment, what are our options?
We do offer an equipment rental program on a first come, first served basis. A $50 deposit check is required to check out any equipment which will be held and returned to you when the equipment is returned at the end of the season. You must provide your own stick, mouth guard and neck guard. Learn more and submit an rental request here. The Bauer Vapor Xtend kit is another great option available at Scheels and Pure Hockey, this kit has all the pads needed to play hockey and can grow with your child (up to age 9 per the label).

Level of Play
To our Mite families:
Starting last season (24/25), we made some changes to the structure of our mite program including the launch of our Rookie level. We are committed to developing our mite players and ensuring that they are playing with their peers and those of equal skill level. To that end, guidelines for birth dates and grade levels have been published for our mite program.
We recognize that some of our families who have been with us for several years are being asked to register for levels that they have already participated in. Again, please be assured that we are committed to ensuring that our skaters are playing at the level appropriate for their age, experience, and skill level. Our On Ice team continually evaluates players and will make changes to levels of play on an individual basis.
Here are supplemental guidelines to the birthday and age guidance:
- Rookie: New to skating (all ages welcome) OR Pre-K/ Kindergarten
- M1: 2nd year skater (usually Kindergarten) OR new to hockey 1st graders who have more skating experience & have basic skating skills semi mastered
- M2: 3rd year skater (usually 1st graders) OR new to hockey 2nd graders who have prior skating experience & have basic skating skills mastered
- M3/4 8U Girls: 4th/5th year skater (usually 2nd/3rd grade) OR skaters with 2 or more years experience and in 3rd grade
- All new to hockey skaters in 3rd grade or above will begin at M2 and be evaluated weekly for adjustments
