Shakopee Hockey Association 2026–2027 Age Levels & Team Placement Guide

Shakopee Hockey Association follows Minnesota Hockey age classifications when organizing players by level of play. Players should register based on their birthdate and age classification. Final team placement may depend on registration numbers, evaluations, level of play, and team formation needs.

Families should use the age level chart below to determine the correct registration level for the 2026–2027 hockey season.

Rookies

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2021 – November 1, 2022

Rookies is an introductory hockey level for our youngest players. This level focuses on helping players become comfortable on the ice while learning basic skating and hockey skills in a fun, age-appropriate environment.

Focus: Skating basics, balance, movement, fun, and introduction to hockey

Checking: No checking

Mite 1

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2020 – May 31, 2021

Mite 1 is designed for young players who are beginning to build skating confidence and basic hockey skills. Players will continue to develop balance, edge work, puck control, and an understanding of the game.

Focus: Skating, basic puck skills, listening, teamwork, and fun

Checking: No checking

Mite 2

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2019 – May 31, 2020

Mite 2 players continue building foundational hockey skills with a focus on skating development, puck handling, small-area games, and confidence on the ice.

Focus: Skill development, teamwork, game awareness, and fun

Checking: No checking


Mite 3 & 4 / 8U

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2017 – May 31, 2019

Mite 3 and Mite 4 are for players who are continuing to grow in their skating and hockey development. These levels may include multiple groupings based on age, skill, experience, and registration numbers.

Focus: Skating, passing, shooting, puck control, small-area games, teamwork, and game awareness

Checking: No checking

Squirt / 10U

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2015 – May 31, 2017

Squirt is typically the first travel hockey level for boys/youth players. Shakopee Hockey may offer multiple levels depending on registration numbers, skill level, and team needs.

Possible Levels: A, B, and C, depending on numbers and team formation

Focus: Skill development, positional awareness, teamwork, competition, and game understanding

Checking: No checking

Peewee / 12U

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2013 – May 31, 2015

Peewee hockey continues to build player development, team concepts, and competitive play. Shakopee Hockey may offer multiple Peewee levels depending on registration numbers, evaluations, and team needs.

Possible Levels: AA, A, B, and C, depending on numbers and team formation

Focus: Skill development, positional play, team systems, compete level, and hockey IQ

Checking: No checking

Bantam / 14U

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2011 – May 31, 2013

Bantam hockey is a competitive youth level where players continue developing advanced skills, team systems, physical play, and game strategy. Shakopee Hockey may offer multiple Bantam levels depending on registration numbers, evaluations, and team needs.

Possible Levels: AA, A, B, and C, depending on numbers and team formation

Focus: Advanced skill development, team systems, competition, physical play, and preparation for high school hockey

Checking: Checking


Junior Gold

Birthdate Range: June 1, 2007 – May 31, 2011

Junior Gold is available for high school-aged players who are not playing high school hockey or who are looking for another competitive hockey opportunity. Team formation depends on registration numbers and association participation.

Focus: Competitive hockey, continued development, teamwork, and high school-aged participation

Checking: Checking
