Safe Sport Information
USA Hockey’s current Safe Sport Handbook says teams must have at least one responsible, screened, and trained adult monitoring locker rooms during team events, and that locker room monitors must complete SafeSport training and a background check. USA Hockey also states SafeSport training is renewed every 12 months, the background screen is $30, and background screens are valid for two seasons.
Steps to Obtain SafeSport Certification
Minnesota Hockey and USA Hockey require teams to have an approved same-gender locker room monitor for practices and games when players are using the locker room. This requirement is in place to help maintain player privacy, support appropriate supervision, and keep a safe environment for all players.
This is not optional for families to decide whether or not to participate in. In order for teams to be compliant, we need parents/volunteers to complete the locker room monitor requirements early so each team is covered throughout the season.
All Locker Room Monitors and Team Managers must complete the following for the current season:
Register as a USA Hockey volunteer — free
Please register using the USA Hockey volunteer registration link.
Complete SafeSport training or the yearly refresher course — free
SafeSport training must be current for the season.
Complete the USA Hockey/NCSI background screening — $30
Background screening is generally valid for two seasons. When you log into the background screening site, it will tell you whether you need to update your screening.
Submit the completion form
Once you have completed your SafeSport certification/refresher and submitted your background screening, please complete the association/team form so we can confirm you are eligible to serve as a Locker Room Monitor.
The process can take time, especially the background screening, so please complete these steps as early as possible.

Background Screening
$30 Fee. Background screening only needs to be completed every 2 years. Log in to the NCSI background screening page to see if you are current.
All are encouraged to visit the screening website and attempt to apply. If your screening is already current and up to date, the system should not allow you to submit a new application.

You are not eligible to submit a screen at this time. Please see www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen for questions. Please note, background screens are valid for two seasons. If you received a cleared screen in the 25-26 season, you will not be able to submit a new screen until the 27-28 season
