The Mikayla McCarvel Memorial Scholarship
While Mikayla shared a love for playing hockey, she also had the ability to inspire and touch the lives of many individuals she encountered. Apart from her numerous activities, Mik was known for being an outstanding teammate, friend, family member, and above all, a young, intelligent woman. She simply lit up a room with her kind smile and fun personality. Mikayla was a girl who never shied away from trying something new; from rigorous hikes to sunset drives, she never failed to face a new challenge. Alongside her adventures, she prioritized her schoolwork and involvement in extracurricular activities. Mikayla was a part of AVID, Student Council, DECA, Jazz Band, CAPS, and 4H, all while excelling as a student-athlete. Her dedication to all these activities influenced everyone around her. Mikayla lived her life true to herself, never turning away from a new opportunity or adventure.
Scholarship Information
What is this scholarship?
- This is a $1500 scholarship is to honor Mikayla McCarvel who wore jersey #15. This grant will be funded exclusively through a portion of concession stand sales at the Shakopee Ice Arena.
Who is eligible to apply for this scholarship?
- A senior at Shakopee High School
- Someone who tried out for the Shakopee High School Hockey or Junior Gold Team
- Played Shakopee Youth Hockey
- Attending post-secondary education
- Someone who best exemplifies who Mikayla was
What characteristics are we looking for?
- Player who always puts the team and others first
- Humble hard worker, who always gives their best
- Support System for the teammates, always has a smile on their face, and everyone on the team feels like they are friends and could come to in a time of need

How does it work?
- Fill out the Scholarship Application
- Please submit by 3/15/2025.
- The Scholarship Committee will review the applications and vote on who will be awarded.
- The Scholarship Recipient will be announced and then awarded the scholarship after proof of enrollment and attendance is received.
Terms of Scholarship
Scope of eligibility:
Eligible for Shakopee senior hockey manager or player who tried out for either Shakopee varsity hockey program or Junior Gold player who also played Shakopee youth hockey.
Funding:
This grant will be funded exclusively through a portion of concession stand sales at the Shakopee Ice Arena. This grant will be excluded from the recipient’s taxable income under IRS Code 74(b).
Term:
This grant will be given to the recipient as a one-time grant following verification of enrollment in a post-secondary institution and may be used for room, board, tuition, books or expenses incidental to the education. This grant is first effective for a senior Hockey Athlete in the 2023/2024 school year and shall continue for a term of five years through the 2028/2029 school year. Following this initial five year term, the scholarship shall automatically renew for additional terms of one year unless it is terminated by either the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association board or the McCarvel family. Notice of termination must be decided by April 1 of that school year and communicated to the other party.
Exclusions:
Any Shakopee senior Hockey Athlete who is an immediate family member of a then current Shakopee Youth Hockey Association Board member is disqualified from receiving this scholarship while their family member serves on the Board.
The Scholarship Committee is composed of the McCarvel family, Shakopee High School Hockey Coaches, and the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association Board.
